Can Stress Management Function as a Form of Acne Treatment or Sebum Control?

Believe it or not you stress levels play a big role in whether your skin breaks out or not. You may be thinking yourself, “What does me looking like a pizza have to do with how much stress I’m dealing with?

Maybe you’re thinking that the stress you get from work or from school are completely divorced from or separate from your skin’s health.

Well, you might want to think again because you have to understand that for you to break out, there have to be several things that would happen at once. This is the reason most people do not suffer from acne all the time. For most people, acne tends to happen during really stressful periods of their life cycle like puberty.

What are these factors?

Well, first of all, when you eat a lot of foods that boost your inflammation levels, and I’m talking about carbohydrates and sugars primarily, you stand to inflame your skin and position them for infection. However, just because you load up on these types of foods doesn’t necessarily mean that acne breakouts will automatically follow. Other things have to fall into place.

The second factor involves androgen levels. This means that you are going through some sort of hormonal fluctuation. Not surprisingly, people going through puberty tend to develop pizza face more often than people in other age brackets. When androgen is in play, sebum control is going to be an issue. You’re basically going to be producing a lot more oil than normal.

Finally, putting it all together is your diet. If you eat a lot of inflammation-boosting foods as well as undergoing stress, then acne is more likely. This doesn’t necessarily mean that simply getting stress out of your system would be the very best acne treatment. However, your chances of developing really severe outbreaks are greatly reduced when you take stress out of the picture. It is not to a slam dunk nor is it a silver bullet but it does play a big role.

So, as much as possible reduce your stress levels, watch what you eat and practice good skin hygiene. With everything else being equal and if you are consistent about all of these practices, you will be in a good position. If you do suffer any kind of acne outbreak, you can bet that they are not going to be as severe as they would otherwise be. Sebum control in this context is much easier to achieve.
